et sequentes
for solo harpsichord
I. Nervoso, quasi patologico
II. Continuum possibile
III. Ancora nervoso ma meno patologico
IV. Nostalgico, un poco schizofrenico (molto rubato)
Year: 2011
Duration: ca. 8’30’’
Prizes: 1st Prize in the 2nd International Composition Prize Fernando Lopes-Graça 2011
Date and place of the premiere: 17th December 2011 – Portuguese Music Museum (Cascais)
Performer of the premiere: Jenny Silvestre (harpsichord)
Editions: AVA Musical Edition - score
Programme Note
Hugo Ribeiro’s piece was awarded the 1st Prize in the 2nd International Composition Prize Fernando Lopes-Graça 2011. The piece shows a remarkable mastery of the mechanical characteristics of the harpsichord; it explores the rich sound pallet of resonances that can come out of the instrument. In actual fact, the harpsichord has very little dynamic variety but Hugo Ribeiro’s adaptable and clever writing makes this more-or-less irrelevant.
et sequentes is distinguished by the recurrent use of the lowest and most harmonically dense registers of the instrument. These harmonic levels are reached in a rhythmically varied way, broadening the range of resonances by the repeated insistence of overlapping patterns in the two manuals.
Contrasting with the first and third, there is a second movement where the notion of tempo assumes a merely indicative role in a musical discourse that is frenetically developed in successive ornaments.
The ‘touch of novelty’ appears in the last movement, composed with clusters that are extended (within the player’s hand limits) to the highest register of the instrument, assuming a pathological act of madness (term used by the composer himself); a sonority with almost no sense which overlaps an indifferent melody with ornaments.
In this work of young composer Hugo Ribeiro we find a mature synthesis of a type of literature for harpsichord whose development has been evident from the transition of the twentieth to the twenty-first centuries.
